Blog Tour, Review and Giveaway: WICKED FALL by Sawyer Bennett

Wicked Fall
by Sawyer Bennett
The Wicked Horse, Book 1

Never in your wildest dreams could you begin to imagine all the filthy and depraved things that go on inside The Wicked Horse. Step inside and Woolf Jennings will make every one of your dirty fantasies come true.

He’s covered in a facade of deception. An enticing blend of multi-millionaire and hot-as-hell Wyoming rancher, those that think they know Woolf Jennings admire his abilities to preside as CEO of his family’s cattle and oil empire. But only a privileged few truly understand what fuels the glitter of depravity in those gorgeous blue eyes. Only a few know he’s opened up a sinfully erotic and private sex club named The Wicked Horse right at the base of the beautiful Teton Mountain range.

Sweet Callie Hayes has returned home to Wyoming and is looking forward to starting her life over again. After a night of impetuosity, she’s managed to put herself right in Woolf’s line of sight… the man who she foolishly offered up her virginity to years ago and was flatly turned down.

Now Woolf is seeing that Callie is all grown up and has a kinky side to her that leaves him as confused as it does turned on. Worse yet, both Callie’s dirty desires and sweet heart are getting under his skin, and making Woolf question everything he’s ever believed about himself.

I would say Sawyer Bennett’s books are a guilty pleasure, but they are not. I feel no guilt in reading her erotic romances like Wicked Fall. I’ve been reading books by Sawyer Bennett for awhile now and I’ve seen her stories evolve from the sweet and innocent contemporary romances to her more erotic stories.  Now, she takes it one step further in Wicked Fall.  This story spotlights an exclusive sex club where virtually any fantasy can be lived.

Wicked Fall features Woolf (as in Virginia Woolf).  He is a successful rancher and Fortune 100 CEO.  Woolf is first introduced as Tenn’s brother in Shaken, Not Stirred, book 5 in the Last Call series. He is also a partner in The Wicked Horse, one of the hottest bars in Wyoming.  It is not what goes on at The Wicked Horse that gets people’s attention, but rather what happens at The Silo, just a few feet from bar.  The Silo is an exclusive, members-only sex club.  The clientele enjoy the kinkier side of sexual encounters and The Silo serves it right up.  Woolf loves his club and his carefree lifestyle.  He and his partner, Bridger, make the most of ownership and freely indulge in what the club can offer.

Callie Hayes is sister of Woolf’s best friend.  Unfortunately, he passed away and  as will happen, the two drifted apart.  Although it goes unacknowledged for years, they have always carried a flame for each other.  Now Callie is back from the East Coast after breaking up with her fiancé and she wants to break that goody-goody image. Fortunately for her, Woolf is right there to provide assistance.

Sawyer Bennett stretches her sexual encounters into new territory.  Because of the setting, there are descriptions about kinkier sex.  I use the word kinkier because with the proliferation of contemporary erotic books, that which was once considered kinky may not be so these days.  The Wicked Horse and The Silo are as much characters in the book as Woolf and Callie.  However, the main couple does not engage in the most extreme behavior, although there is a ménage scene. I’m not a fan of threesomes.  I have a difficult time reading about them in a romance novel because I don’t like the idea of having a divided heart.  What can I say? I’m old-fashioned in that way.  The heart of this this narrative and what keeps it cohesive and dramatic is that author’s characters are essentially grounded.  Despite the sensational context, this is still a story about insecurity, heartbreak, and love.

We are also introduced to two side characters who will certainly be getting their own books.  Bridger is Woolf’s partner, who is both highly intuitive and completely closed off.  Secondly, we meet Cain Murphy, head of security at The Wicked Horse, who is a major player in the club.  The Epilogue gave me quite a pause and I’m very curious to see where the storyline leads.  Whoa, just whoa.

IN A NUTSHELL:

Although taking place in a sex club, this is not a story about a sex club.  It is still, at its heart, an old-fashioned love story.  Okay, there is still a lot of sex, but it still a sweet story. Go read it.

ARC Review: HEAT EXCHANGE by Shannon Stacey

Heat Exchange
by Shannon Stacey
Boston Fire, Book 1

Lydia Kincaid's shipping back to Boston, but she's not happy about it. She left to get away from the firefighting community—her father was a firefighter, her brother's a firefighter and, more important, her ex is a firefighter. But family is number one, and her father needs her help running the pub he bought when he retired. Soon, Lydia finds it hard to resist the familiar comfort and routine, and even harder to resist her brother's handsome friend Aidan.

Aidan Hunt is a firefighter because of the Kincaid family. He's had the hots for Lydia for years, but if ever a woman was off-limits to him, it's her. Aside from being his mentor's daughter, she's his best friend's sister. The ex-wife of a fellow firefighter. But his plan to play it cool until she leaves town again fails, and soon he and Lydia have crossed a line they can't uncross.

As Aidan and Lydia's flirtation turns into something more serious, Lydia knows she should be planning her escape. Being a firefighter's wife was the hardest thing she's ever done, and she doesn't know if she has the strength to do it again. Aidan can't imagine walking away from Boston Fire—even for Lydia. The job and the brotherhood are his life; but if he wants Lydia in it, he'll have to decide who's first in his heart.

I’m a sucker for stories about first responders.  I love their heroic nature, their courage and self-sacrifice.  But also know that all that comes at a cost to both the first responder and the people they love.  Shannon Stacey does a great job highlighting this struggle in this first book of her Boston Fire series.

I really enjoyed this contemporary romance. In a cohesive manner, Heat Exchange features a poignant theme faced by many families – taking a secondary priority to the needs of the job. Being a first responder can be all-consuming. This is especially so with firefighters who spend periods of time living with one another.  They rely on each other for their lives and forge a strong family bond that sometimes supersedes their relationships with their actual family members.  One can understand how a family member can feel like he or she comes in second place to the firefighting family. This painful reality is the central theme in the narrative.

Lydia Kincaid has been surrounded by the fire service all her life.  Between her father, brother and her ex-husband, she is used to coming in second place in their lives.  That is why she swore off firefighters and left Boston. But she reluctantly returns when her sister, Ashley, begs her to come back to help her in Ashley’s time of need.  Being a dutiful sister, Lydia returns and lands straight in the middle of Aiden Hunt’s affections.

Aiden grew up around Lydia’s family.  Aiden’s best friend is Lydia’s brother.  They currently work together at the same fire station.  Despite the turmoil their relationship is sure to create, they start a torrid affair that burns right through the pages of the book.  However, based on Lydia’s history, she knows the cost of being in a relationship with a firefighter and she is unwilling to be second fiddle to the job, and so she holds herself back in the relationship.  It is only when Aiden proves that he loves her more than the job does the couple get their HEA.

The conflict is made even more complicated by the colorful characters in their lives: Lydia’s dad and Aiden’s mentor, Lydia’s brother and Aiden’s best friend, Lydia’s sister and the memories of Lydia’s ex-husband.  It’s all a family affair.  There is also a secondary story featuring Lydia’s sister, Ashley and her husband Danny that I found endearing as well.  Ashley and Danny have a difficult relationship fraught with miscommunication and complacency.  This brought a nice additional element to the family conflict.

IN A NUTSHELL:
This is just the kind of romance you want featuring a firefighting family.

ARC Review: SEAL WOLF HUNTING by Terry Spear

SEAL Wolf Hunting
by Terry Spear
Heart of the Wolf series, Book #16

Paul Cunningham is one of the only bachelors left on the SEAL wolf team, and he's less than thrilled to hear he's been volunteered for a local charity bachelor auction.

Lori Greypaw suspected that her grandmother would use the auction as an opportunity to fix her up. So she's not surprised when she "buys" Paul to help Lori renovate her mountain cabin for a week. Lori's had a crush on the sexy SEAL wolf for years, but he proves to be handy with more than a hammer when two fugitives come knocking and he'll do anything to protect the woman he's falling for...

SEAL Wolf Hunting is book 16 in the Heart of the Wolf series and my first book by this author.  I found this book to be entertaining, if a bit uneven. At its foundation, there is a good storyline.  Paul is a member of an elite covert security company made up of SEAL shifters.  He loves his work.  He is also a member of a pack in his hometown, one of only two male wolves.  His parents were the leaders of the pack before they were killed and he is in line to take over the alpha leader role.  So far, he has not taken up the mantel. He is now home for a little R&R and gets roped into a “honey-do” bachelor auction.  But being home also means being close to Lori Greypaw, the woman who makes him think about more than his work with his teammates.

In the field of shifter stories, this is nice read.  Interesting elements such as the recovery of bones buried in the lake, and Native American art and culture pepper the story. However, the narrative is uneven.  Pacing is a problem.  The romance takes way too long to establish, especially since Paul and Lori already know one another.  On the other hand, the suspense/mystery is rushed and resolved too quickly.  Repetitive phrasing and words make the story feel clunky.  The term “SEAL” itself is used 82 times.  Additionally, dated phrases from the 80’s such as and “enjoying each other to the max” bring a chuckle and seems out of place in this very contemporary story.

IN A NUTSHELL:

Although the story has lots of potential, there are many other shifter series that are faster paced.  I would probably put this in the middle of a PNR TBR list.  Something enjoyable, if not overly exciting.

Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher and author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
