Book Release and Review: SEXY LIES AND ROCK & ROLL by Sawyer Bennett

Sexy Lies and Rock & Roll
By Sawyer Bennett

When you’re a rock god, fame and fortune are your two best friends, but they can be fickle bitches. Everyone wants a piece of me and I have no clue how to deal with it all. I’m being sued, pressured to sign contracts, and fending off rabid women who want to steal my virtue.
Well, not that I really have any virtue, but still… my life has turned completely bat-shit crazy.
That’s why I need Emma Peterson. She got me out of a bit of a jam once, and I know she can do it again. The only problem is that sweet, prim and totally straight-laced Emma doesn’t want anything to do with me. Not professionally, and certainly not personally.
It’s not that I want her in that way. Let’s be realistic… it would take a crow bar of epic proportions to get her to spread those legs for me.
No, I only want her legal expertise and for her to make sense of my crazy world. It’s a good thing I have just the leverage to make her do my bidding, because her refusal is not an option.

*Sexy Lies and Rock & Roll is a hot, romantic comedy stand alone.

REVIEW:
Slurp….that this sound of me getting sucked in again.  Having read most of Sawyer Bennett’s other books, I thought I knew what to expect, but she drew me into the vortex, gave my emotions a little rattle and spit me out to a happy place.  Sexy Lie and Rock & Roll features Evan Scott, a rising indie music star.  With his first album a bonafide hit, he is learning to deal with the joys and pains of fame.  Emma Peterson is a straight laced attorney at one of the most maverick law firms out there.  She feels out of place and out of her league with the other attorneys, but is none the less assigned a special case by the firm’s principle partner.  She can’t exactly say “no”, can she?

This book is vintage Sawyer Bennett.  It reminds me so much of her earlier work where it leans more toward romance and less erotica.  Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of steamy scenes, but the story is driven more by the relationship than by the sex.  The other interesting aspect of this story is that this is not your typical rock star romance.  Evan and Emma’s conflict are less rooted rock and roll conflicts, but are driven more by inner turmoil.  Sure, there are some familiar themes, namely insecurity and betrayal, but it does not emanate from the star.  Evan is a regular guy finding himself in an extraordinary circumstance doing the thing that he loves most.

I’m am always just going to be a normal man who happened to step into a very abnormal kind of existence.  But the one lesson Midge drilled into me during my formative years is that you have to stay genuine.

This is Sawyer Bennett’s hallmark.  You can find the good guy in most of her books.  When I’m done with all the alphaholes and just want a good book boyfriend - a character that is self-possessed, self-aware, patient, kind-hearted - I look to Sawyer Bennett.

If I could ask for more, I would want to know more about Tyler.  There is a conflict involving this character and I want to know how it started, when things changed.  I feel like there are more layers to the character and I want more explanation for his behavior.

IN A NUTSHELL:
Want a feel good romance featuring a rock god with a regular joe heart?  This is the book for you.

ARC Review: Rock Redemption by Nalini Singh

Rock Redemption
by Nalini Singh
Book 3, Rock Kiss series

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Kit Devigny could have loved rock guitarist Noah St. John. Their friendship burned with the promise of intense passion and searing tenderness…until the night Noah deliberately shattered her heart.

Noah knows he destroyed something precious the night he chose to betray Kit, but he’d rather she hate him than learn his darkest secret. All he has left is his music. It’s his saving grace, but it doesn’t silence the voices that keep him up at night. Chasing oblivion through endless one-night-stands, he earns a few hours’ sleep and his bad boy reputation.

When a media error sees Noah and Kit dubbed the new “it” couple, Kit discovers her chance at the role of a lifetime hinges on riding the media wave. Wanting—needing—to give Kit this, even if he can’t give her everything, Noah agrees to play the adoring boyfriend. Only the illusion is suddenly too real, too painful, too beautiful…and it may be too late for the redemption of Noah St. John.

I have to admit this was a difficult review to write.  Difficult because the book is disappointing.  I can tell how much love and care Nalini Singh puts into her characters. There is a loving touch to the story.  However, my biggest problem is that there is entirely too much repetition of the same theme.  Noah feels unworthy and is terrified to move his relationship with Kit to the next level.  Therefore, he intentionally hurts her to push Kit away.  From Kit's perspective, she suffers devastating disappointment from Noah and she rightly cuts him off.  But he comes back into her life and creates all kinds of havoc, again.

Yes, Noah comes off as selfish and spiteful, but we learn that he has also been through devastating trauma- it's the kind of abuse that would be a tear to anyone's eyes. Because of this, he suffers from a form of PTSD.  The problem is that Noah's character does not mature and development for most of the book. He doesn't get help and he doesn't want to talk about it. He doesn't experience change or emotional growth, therefore his character's behavior is repetitive.  He has endless excuses as to why he should not be with Kit and yet, he draws her to him like a moth to a flame.  Poor Kit, it is like watching a train wreck happen.  I hate sounding like a judg-y girlfriend, but I just wanted to shake Kit and say, "Come on. Don't let him back into your life!"

I also have a problem with books in which the one partner tries to solve a mental health issue with information from the internet. From her research Kit comes up with a plan that seems to help Noah, and there is a beautiful moment in the story.  However, I think this is a dangerous path without professional guidance.  Mental illness is not an easy fix for most people and it would have made me more comfortable if Kit has an actual conversation with a counselor.

IN A NUTSHELL:
After loving Rock Hard, I was hoping for another solid read.  Unfortunately, this one fell short for me.  However, the disappointment is not enough to stop me from wanting to read the next book in the series. I will look forward to the next new edition.

Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions are my own and I was not paid for this review.

SUNNY - BLOG TOUR: "Ripped" by Katy Evans

Ripped
by Katy Evans

SUMMARY
Every woman wants me–except the one I sing for.
Seattle shakes with anticipation: they call it the concert of the year. They say girls are getting pregnant just thinking about my band being in town.
But when you love a girl, you don’t leave her with nothing but a ring and a promise. Any man with half a brain should know.
So what did I expect my girl would do when she saw me again?
Well, for starters, she loathes our music. Particularly the song I wrote about her.
When I sing it, the stadium is in an uproar. Thousands of fans scream my name like I’m a god–but yeah, not her. Crystal clear: the girl’s not happy to see me.
Black hair, black boots, a bad attitude, that’s her — Pandora Stone is a freaking man-eater and she’s out for my blood.

That’s alright.
Let her come at me. Because I’m out for her heart and, this time, there’s no way she can stop me.

Pandora
McKenna

After having mixed feelings about the first book in the series, Real, I was curious about where Katy Evans was going to take this story.

This book was enjoyable.  This is a story about second chances (and I’m a big fan of this trope.) What is unique about this narrative is the level of hate engendered by Pandora after the breakup: “The kind of hatred that’s only born of an intense, out-of-this-word love that went woefully wrong.” Usually the heroine exhibits a lot of trepidation and wariness, but not levels of hate.  This relationship leaves her feeling like she is a jinx, that bad news follows wherever she goes. After 6 years, she strikes out to get revenge and hopefully, finally close the door on her past.  MacKenna is also a reluctant participant. The misunderstanding that leads to their breakup damages him as well and he initially exhibits mean behavior as well.  But this is the story of first love and how deeply impactful that can be…even for a rockstar who seems to “have it all.”

In the past, I may have complained about a heroine like this as being immature, but this couple strikes the right balance for me.  MacKenna is still alpha, but in a really appealing manner because he is not always in control of his emotions and I like it when he is a little off-balanced.  I like the things he likes about her – her courage, vulnerability, spunk. I like that despite the fact that he is a famous rockstar, with everything at his disposal, he imagines a quiet life with Pandora.

IN A NUTSHELL:

Maybe I was just in the mood for a sweet love story and this one hit the spot.

Katy Evans grew up with books and book-boyfriends until she found a real sexy boyfriend to love. They married and are now hard at work on their own happily ever after. Katy loves her family and friends, and she also loves reading, walking, baking, and being consumed by her characters until she reaches “The End.” Which is, hopefully, only the beginning…

SUNNY - BLOG TOUR, REVIEW AND GIVEAWAY: Rock Courtship by Nalini Singh

Welcome to the blog tour for Rock Courtship, Nalini Singh's novella in her Rock Kiss Series.
Today we have a Excerpt, Review and Giveaway!  Rock On!

Rock Courtship
by Nalini Singh
Book 1.5 in the Rock Kiss Series

SUMMARY:
What happens when the Gentleman of Rock decides to play dirty?

A drummer for the hottest rock band on the planet, David has a single, powerful weakness: Thea, the band’s publicist and the woman who steals his breath away with her every move.

Only problem is, Thea doesn’t date clients—or musicians. Emotionally scarred by a cheating ex, she’s not about to risk her heart with a man who has groupies buzzing around him like flies. Even if his sexy smile ties her up in knots.

What she doesn’t know is that David is a one-woman man...and he’s madly in love with her. David’s determined to prove he’s worth the risk, and willing to court her, step by exquisite step. Thea’s about to discover just how long and hard this handsome drummer can play.

The best review I can give this book is that when I finished, I really wanted more.  A step up from book one, this novella has a little more nuance.  My favorite part of this book? David. David. David. David is the gentleman of the band.  More than just the drummer, he also helps keeps the band on a steady beat.  Not given to wild antics or conflict (well, at least when it isn’t warranted), David maintains the equilibrium. Coming from a lower-economic neighborhood, David is the “scholarship” kid at the exclusive private school where the band members first meet. He is not the priviledged kid, but he soon falls in with the future members of the band. Back at home, in the working-class neighborhood where David grew up, he has had to learn to be scrappy and persevere, skills necessary for his pursuit of Thea.  I like that David is not like the other members of the band with secret, and heretofore, unknown pain.  David’s pain is trying to get Thea to let go of her primary rule to not date clients.

Although some might consider it “overdone”, I liked Ms. Singh’s use of electronic messaging to convey are characters’ thoughts to one another.  It stands as a commentary about not only our obsession with electronic media, but also our willingness to expose so much vulnerability when we don’t have to confront someone face to face.  I look forward to these little messages because I know we will get to the truth of the characters’ feelings toward one another.

As a contemporary romance this works for me because David is sweet and he is "all-in" to this relationship.  As a rock and roll contemporary romance, I do miss a little of edge and angst.  I imagine that the stories of the remaining members of the band might be a little more gritty.  I'm ready for that.

IN A NUTSHELL:
A sweet, contemporary love story, featuring a highly likable hero, this is a great addition to the series.

EXCERPT:
“Beer—whatever you have on tap,” David said to the grizzled bartender and grabbed a stool, his eye on the rugby game in progress on the TV screen bolted above the bar.
He’d hardly taken a sip of his beer, the dark liquid bitingly cold, when he felt a presence at his back. Instincts honed by a childhood in one of the toughest areas of New York had him focusing on the mirror behind the bar to check out the situation before he turned. A big, bald, and heavily muscled male with a spiderweb tattoo on his neck was standing behind and just to the side of David, a smirk on his pockmarked face.
Belly heating, David turned with a slight smile. “Problem?”
The bald man bared his teeth and, laughing, looked to a table to his right. “Hear that, boys?” he called out to his friends. “The pussy rock star here wants to know if there’s a problem.”
Laughter and shouts from that particular table, while the rest of the men in the bar went quiet. David didn’t move, taking a measure of the players without letting it show. “Always know your opponent” had been one of the first things his father had taught him—Vicente Rivera didn’t believe in turning the other cheek; he believed in teaching his sons how to put bullies on the ground and keep them there.
“Yeah, there’s a problem,” the bald guy said, shoving at David’s shoulder. “This is a real bar for real men. Not pussies.”
Like that, then. Good. He was in the mood to do some violence. Lifting his beer, David took a long drink, then slammed it down… and punched Bald Head in the jaw at the same time that he kicked out with his foot to connect with the other man’s knee. The jackass went down like a ton of bricks.
Roaring in rage, the man’s friends came at David.
He grinned and started to show them what this “pussy rock star” could do.
It wasn’t until they’d broken a table and several chairs, and the bartender had called the cops that David realized Thea would have to deal with the fallout from this. Fuck, fuck, fuck, he thought as he was shoved into a cell alone, his erstwhile opponents in the cell opposite. Sliding down the graffiti-marked wall to the floor, he thought about the phone call the desk sergeant had said he could make and decided against it.
Fox had Molly with him—the band’s lead singer had been waiting for his girl to arrive since the instant Schoolboy Choir set foot in the city. As for Noah and Abe, they both had their own plans. He knew any one of the three men would drop those plans in an instant to come to his aid, but since the cops had made it clear he’d be spending the night in a cell no matter what, why mess up their plans?
“You do or say anything that’ll hit the media, you call me. Day or night. I hate surprises—so don’t you dare surprise me.”
Thea had given that order to all four of them when she’d agreed to act as their publicist. Her up-front nature and dedication to her job was part of the reason they’d hired her; Thea was the best and she didn’t take any shit from her clients. He wasn’t doing himself any favors by not calling her.
Right then, David couldn’t find it in himself to care. It wasn’t as if she could hurt him any more than she already had. And Jesus, how long was he going to carry this torch that was burning him alive? “Fuck, fuck, fuck,” he said aloud, banging the back of his head against the wall.
