REVIEW:
Blue Horizon is book #4 in the Shades of Blue series. It is a novella. Having not read the previous three books, I found myself a bit lost in the story. I would not recommend this as a stand alone. There are many characters in the context of this book whose stories seem necessary in telling this one. Having said that, let me comment on the story itself.
Hildie McQueen paints a stark portrait of the pioneers of the West. It is a violent, dangerous, lonely landscape, where families and neighbors depend on each other for survival. She captures those nuances very well.
This is a simple love story of two people who have experienced deep loss. They find a gentle succor in one another. The story of Josiah and Laura is pretty straightforward, although it is of note that a lot seems to happen "off the page". I enjoyed it enough that it peaked my interest in the first three books. I am curious and look forward to finding out more about the Cole family.
