SUNNY: BLOG TOUR "Dark Cravings", GIVEAWAY and CONNECT FOUR with Madeline Pryce

Welcome to the Dark Cravings Blog Tour. We are thrilled to be a part of the party for the release of Dark Cravings. Join us for our Connect Four (Connect Four is a series of author interviews. Four quick questions to dig deeper with some of our favorite writers.) with the book's author, Madeline Pryce.

I had the privilege of siting down with the dynamic Madeline Pryce for an interview to talk about the newly released Dark Cravings(*Squeal*  Excuse my little fan-girl moment).

Dark Cravings is the revised and expanded version of Blood Lust Rising under a new publisher, Ellora's Cave.

How is Dark Cravings different from Blood Lust Rising?

I have expanded Dark Cravings by about 10 to 15 thousand words.  Some scenes are more fully developed and new scenes are added.  I've included a flashback for Ella and Micah and wrote a more detailed ending.  There is definitely more of Hannah and Eli in this book and they are aged from teenagers to twenty-somethings. This book is more detailed. It is sharper and cleaner.  Overall, it's a better book.

What is next in the series?

Up next is a novella about Hannah and Dante called Dark Innocence. (Expected publication January 31, 2014)  This one came out so differently than I thought it would. Given what Hannah experienced at the end of the last book, it is not surprising that this book is raw and dark. But what is surprising is the appearance of Dante.  He comes out of no where and sweeps Hannah (and me) off her feet.

I'm currently working on Micah and Ella's next book. I also have a PNR book that is three years in the making. I am also eagerly working on a post-apocalyptic story.

What was the journey from self-publishing to signing with Ellora's Cave?

I've been writing for about 13 years.  I first published with a less-than-legitimate (I didn't know this at the time) fiction house.  Looking back, my stories were not very good, but they published them anyway and I never got paid for my work.  But this was a very important stepping stone because it gave me the courage to find a better e-publisher.  I learned a lot from that experience.

I kept writing and honing my craft. I finished Blood Lust Rising and submitted it to several publishers.  I was asked to submit additional chapters, but unfortunately, the book was not picked up.  I decided to go the self-publishing route.  There was an amazing response to the book.  Self-publishing also means conducting all the marketing and promotion.  This took up all my writing time.

Eventually, I decided to resend my book to Ellora's Cave.  They had previously asked me to submit additional chapters, but at that time I had already decided to self-publish.  This time, they accepted the book with a new title.  My editor pushed me and the editing process was brutal. However, I am proud of my the new book.

You had a previous pen name of Fayth Devlin.  How did you choose your new name?

It is based on trial and error.  It doesn't have any personal relevance to me.  I wanted two strong names that sounded good together.  I also had to ensure that no one else had the same name (like a porn star).

Thank you, Madeline for joining us.  We eagerly looking forward to reading your new work.

SUMMARY:

As a half-breed vampire, Ella Grey’s life sucks. She does her best to pass the time killing demons and secretly admiring her Shadow Hunter partner, Micah. He’s hot, dangerous and knows it. He’d be just Ella’s type if he weren’t likely to kill her the moment she put a toe out of line.

A chance encounter with a succubus changes everything. From the second the succubus’s spell washes over them, Ella and Micah are helpless to keep their hands off one another. The sex, when it’s not leaving them on the verge of death, is earth shattering and for the first time in ages Ella is connected with someone on a level she’d feared lost forever. But a dangerous prophecy has been set into motion, and if Ella’s not careful it’ll pull her straight from Micah’s arms and into the deepest bowels of the underworld.

REVIEW:

This is a revised review of Dark Cravings, formerly published as Blood Lust Rising

Having had the opportunity to revisit this story for this review, two things struck me:

1. This is an exciting ride.  It's like being dropped into the middle of a class 5 white water rafting trip.  It is fast with lots of twists and turns.  Yet, unlike other books, I did not feel lost, but rather connected to the characters.

2. The new additions address my original critiques.  Madeline Price expands the early chapters of the book to include a flashback that connects two important points in the story.  It helps us visualize the extent of the connection between Ella and Micah following the encounter with the succubus.  She also flushes out the ending and it is satisfying.  There are deeper connections between characters making the conflicts and concerns more agonizing.

IN A NUTSHELL:
I again heartily recommend this book. It is a fun, fast and furious read.

Original review on 1/9/12

This book hit me like a Mac Truck and then I just hitched onto the back bumper and went along for the thrilling ride. From the moment it starts with a lust curse cast by a demon, Ella Gray and Micah MacGregor are never be the same. They are inextricably linked together as lifemates and literally need each other to survive. They are confronted by their overwhelming sexual need, a vengeful Queen vampire, werewolves, and a jealous alpha sire.

This story hits all the right buttons:
1. The sexually encounters are passionate. (I’m pretty sure my Kindle had steam rising off of it.)  2. The characters are memorable. Micah is an über alpha with a mysterious background who is both possessive and tender (the right formula for an alpha). Ella is a kick-ass heroine who follows in the footsteps of her family as a demon/vampire/shapeshifter/ Shadow Hunter. She struggles with her own transformation. 3. The action is thrilling. There are a few blood-spilling, Buffy-like fight scenes

My only critique is that I am left wanting more, which is not always a bad way to end a book. But in this case, I want more descriptions about Ella. I don’t have a clear picture in my head of what she looks like. And what kind of life was Micah living away from his duties as a Shadow Hunter? We only get a small glimpses into their history. Also, perhaps knowing a little more about the background histories of the characters (Uncle Roy, Eli, Castro) would add an additional layer of understanding to their motivations. Or, alternatively, this can be covered in the next installment -- of which I am impatiently awaiting!

SUNNY: RELEASE EVENT "Legal Affairs: Objection" by Sawyer Bennett

An Adult Contemporary Romance Serial Series
By Bestselling Author Sawyer Bennett

Legal Affairs: Objection is FREE for a limited time.

BLURB:

One year ago, I graduated from law school and embarked on a career as a purveyor of high priced legal shenanigans.
Six months ago, my boyfriend dumped me when I thought he might be proposing.
Two weeks ago, I got drunk and joined a secret sex club.
Two days ago, I had a torrid one-night stand with a stranger.
Today? Well, today I’m contemplating having an affair with my boss.
Matt Connover is all kinds of forbidden temptation wrapped up in a deliciously wicked package, and he’s made it clear… he’s only interested in sex.
My name is McKayla Dawson but everyone calls me Mac. I work at the powerhouse firm of Connover & Crown, LLP, where the law has never felt so hot.
But between you and me, I’m afraid my heart won’t survive these Legal Affairs.

Bringing My Real Life Into Fictional Writing
By Sawyer Bennett

So, I’m a lawyer. A trial lawyer to be exact. I’ve spent the past 16 years arguing my heart out to juries but honestly, it wasn’t that big of a transition to bring my creativity in oral prose to the pages.

I’ve been dying to write a romance with a legal theme floating in the background. Legal Affairs was the perfect opportunity and I have more ideas for future books that revolve around lawyers, hot sex, gooey romance and interesting cases.

In Legal Affairs, I went light on the legal action. This was mainly because each volume has a limited budget of words, but there is a defined case that our heroine, McKayla Dawson handles in this story. It’s an actual case based on one of the very first cases I handled when I was a young lawyer fresh out of law school. The factual details are straight from my own files and it was an amazing trip down memory lane.

One of my biggest challenges as a trial lawyer was getting a jury to step into my client’s shoes… to make them feel in their gut how much my client had been affected. It’s been an incredible journey to make my readers feel an emotional tie to the characters in my stories.  When that connection happens, it is beyond awesome.

Legal Affairs is a serial romance with a whole lot of hot and a little bit of funny. It has six volumes that will be released every two weeks, the first one, entitled Objection, on January 10, 2014. Each title is between 12,000-15,000 words with the last one close to 20,000 words.

Legal Affairs – Objection – releasing January 10, 2014
Legal Affairs – Stipulation – releasing January 24, 2014
Legal Affairs – Violation – releasing February 7, 2014
Legal Affairs – Mitigation – releasing February 21, 2014
Legal Affairs – Reparation – releasing March 7, 2014
Legal Affairs – Affirmation – releasing March 21, 2014

Legal Affairs: Objection is FREE for a limited time. Each installment thereafter will be priced at .99 cents.

EXCERPT:
A deep vibration rose from his chest. Logan backed me up and the next thing I knew, I was lying on the hood of Justus’s sleek Porsche. What was once a vast collection of exquisite cars was now a collection of three, aside from the Ducati, which he rarely drove.

Logan’s ravenous tongue found a sensitive spot on my neck that made me crave his skin against mine. I slipped my hands beneath his shirt, scratching at his strong back. I loved the way his body felt. The taut muscles along his abs, the baby-fine hair on his arms and legs, the masculine cut of his jaw, and especially right now, the thick press between my legs. The hood of the car dented from our weight and Logan’s heated breath stirred a voice within me that wanted to say “to hell with it” and have sex right on top of my Ghuardian’s one-hundred-thousand-dollar Porsche.

“Wait, Logan. We’re going to mess up his car.”

When his tongue entered my mouth, the complaint was forgotten.

Until the garage door lifted up.

REVIEW (Mild spoiler ahead):
As I finished this book, I took a moment to pause and think about how far we have come with Zoe/Silver.  It has been quite the journey which has taken us to some difficult places but with creativity and imagination always.

The strength of this series is the storytelling and it is no different for this final installment of the Mageri series.  I can tell that Dannika Dark is a romantic at heart.  Every relationship that we have come to love is strengthened.  The story is not always happy and there are some moments that my heart feels heavy, but this story does have a happily ever after.  You will find all your favorites back: Logan, Justus, Paige, Simon, Christian, Finn, Sunny, Novis, Adam, and all the Cross brothers.  In some ways, this is one of the weaknesses of the story.  By bringing back all the characters from the previous stories, I am reminded that there is still so much to learn about, especially the Cross brothers.  We are also introduced to a new, important character, but there is not enough of her to really get an attachment.  Still others get a nice sense of closure - especially Silver, Justus, and Adam.  To me, Adam's story has a nice resolution - one that left me satisfied (except for his interactions with Sadie.  Please, Dannika, say there will be more to this story).

Dannika Dark's writing is very straightforward.  There is little ambiguity and subtlety.  It is both her strength and weakness. Her direct writing allows for a strong narrative.  She knows the story she wants to tell and takes us along in the journey and it is a joy. However, sometimes that forthrightness has a scent of being preachy. It is not distracting to the storyline, but I wonder if the story could be a little more nuanced.

IN A NUTSHELL:
Dannika Dark shows her affection for her characters by giving them a wonderful story to end this series.  What began as a buddy reads on Goodreads has reached a satisfying end. So happy to be a part of this journey.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

This is the segment where you learn a little more about who I am, so here's what I can tell you:  I drink copious amounts of vitamin water placed precariously close to my laptop while writing. These are two healthy habits I have no intention of breaking. I'm a transplant living in the south, but I was born in the 70's to a military dad who moved us around the world.

When I'm not writing (which is all the time), I'm hunting down Indie music, watching movies, reading, eating Tex-Mex, discovering new ways to humiliate myself bowling, and burning up my laptop battery on the Internet. I have a relaxed, easy-going personality and don't like drama. I live with a cat who thinks she is a dog, or a goat (she eats plastic, so I'm not sure which).

Throughout my life, I've had insomnia. Counting sheep never worked and eventually I would imagine those sheep were the sole source of food after an apocalyptic battle where only thousands survived. I made up stories in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I got so wrapped up in my "head stories" that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down - creating short stories, and then I discovered my love for poetry.

It's almost embarrassing how many spiral notebooks and stacks of paper I have of poetry and lyrics.

Another passion: digital art. I design all my book covers, marketing, and series art. I'm a very visual person and pursued photography as an avid hobby for many years.

I am not a YA author (I feel like I have to state this only because I've had a few people ask), but I think it's wonderful there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal.

I am finally doing what I have always wanted to do: giving my characters a pulse through writing full time. I focus on adult urban fantasy romance, but I don't like labels and I enjoy blending genres to break out of the confines of predictability.

But it's what I love to do.

SUNNY: BOOK REVIEW "After the Storm" by Maya Banks

SUMMARY:
Over the years, Donovan Kelly has fought relentlessly for justice, women and children always holding a special place in his heart. Working side by side with his brothers, Donovan has witnessed firsthand the toll it’s taken—physically, mentally, and emotionally—on his loved ones, and the innocent lives caught in the crossfire. What he never expects is for his next mission to happen right on his home turf—or for it to take a very personal turn.

Picturesque Kentucky Lake is the perfect place for a soul in search of safe harbor. A beautiful stranger has arrived—desperate, breathless, and on the run from a dark past closing in on her and the younger siblings she has vowed to protect. Donovan must now draw on every resource at his disposal—if he wants to save a woman and the children who may prove to be his destiny.

REVIEW:
When I started this story, I felt a little like Van's sisters-in-law when they first met Eve - a little nervous, a little hopeful and a little protective.  Van is the MAN.  He's the KGI brother who is the most sensitive.  Don't get me wrong, he is all alpha - but with a heart of gold.  It has taken Maya Banks eight books to get here, but we finally have Donovan's story.

This week, Carolyn Crane, the author of the Disillusionist Trilogy and the Associates series, wrote an interesting article asking the question, "Why are man tribes so sexy and compelling?".  I couldn't help but think of this article as I was reading the book. It reminds me of why I love man tribes.  One reason is the joy of Patheticness.  According to Ms. Crane, patheticness is "when one of the heroes or their hunky friends is in an emotional dilemma and the guys sort of give each other heartfelt, but sort of simplistic advice. Stuff like, you gotta go after her, man."  With six Kelly brothers, Sean and Swanny, and Steele around, there are plenty of opportunities for Patheticness.  Because everyone wants this for Donovan, there is a lot of advice given out by his pack mates.  It is endearing to see these rough alphas give advice on the softer side of life.  Unlike the stereotype, real men do give each other relationship advice and it's a part of their bonding ritual.

The second reason this is the perfect man tribe book is Brotherly Love.  The Kellys are literally brothers, but this circle extends to outside members including Sean, Swanny and even though she is a female, Skylar.  Brotherly Love has less to do with gender and more to do with the trust that no matter what happens, "I've got your back."

Events move super fast and the story is rife with misunderstandings, insecurities, and lots of distrust.  As you would expect in a book about Donovan's love life, it is emotional.  And here is my critique.  It is almost too much of a good thing.  I love books where the alpha shows softer emotions: love, fear, remorse, sadness. Donovan seems at times incapacitated by his overwhelming feelings.  It's fine if it happens once or twice, but over and over again?

There are two main themes that repeat, one dealing with insta-love and the other addressing Donovan's extreme care for women and children.  Is Donovan in love or just the idea of being in love because can you really fall in love overnight? This question is repeated multiple times.  Yet, despite this repetition, somehow the story still works, for the most part, because it is our beloved Donovan, I can't say that I would have the same level of tolerance if it were any other character.

Still, this is a KGI book so there is lots of action, lots of camaraderie, and lots of steamy interactions between Van and Eve.

IN A NUTSHELL:
Reasons to read this book: 1. It's Donovan's story  2. Man Tribe goodness 3. Classic KGI action adventure.
