ARC Book Review: GOING DEEP by Anne Calhoun

Going Deep
by Anne Calhoun
Alpha Ops, Book 5

SHE’LL ROCK HIS WORLD

After weeks on a sold-out tour, singer Cady Ward is coming home for the holidays. But after one too many episodes of fan-craziness, Cady’s manager decides that she needs protection—in the form of muscled cop Conn McCormick. Longing for peace and quiet to prepare before her next album drops, Cady doesn’t need a bodyguard just to deal with some vague email threats…though she can’t deny that close proximity to Conn’s body is a very nice place to be.

Conn is in the midst of a career scandal when his boss assigns him to pop-star guard duty. It’s a poor use of his skills, even though Cady’s feisty nature proves the perfect distraction for Conn while Internal Affairs investigates his case. What begins as a sizzling attraction becomes something deeper than either Conn or Cady could have expected. But when Conn uncovers the sinister plan behind the threats to Cady, he’s faced with a professional dilemma: To save her life, will he risk having a future with the only woman who’s ever touched his soul?

REVIEW

On the surface, the pairing of this stoic, hard-ass cop and soulful, easy-going singer is unexpected. However, what they do have in common, is that they are often judged by their appearances instead of the content of their character. Conn McCormick is a hard charger. He's a pro-active officer and that occasionally gets him into trouble. He's also a guy who is values loyalty; he just has to be sure that it is not blind loyalty. Recently, he is being asked work security for Cady Ward, a breakout singer dealing with the consequences of growing fame and a hit debut album.

My favorite part of the book is reading Conn's development. I like learning about his past and how that makes him the gold-hearted, yet misunderstood, man. His pursuit of his father's record reveals the heart of his dysfunction. The awkward, bad-boy side of this character appeals to me.

If Conn is a bit on the dark side, then Cady is in the light. She is naturally optimistic, maybe it's the artist in her who can see the beauty in every day moments. But she is a nice foil for Conn. She has her own challenges in making choices for her own career.

My biggest critique is that there is a lot going on in this story and the ending is wrapped up a little too neatly. However, it is minor distraction to a good read.

Thank you to the author and publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Cover Reveal: TWINED BOND by Emma Hart

TWINED BOND
by Emma Hart
Holly Wood #7

All is well in Holly Woods. My best friend's love triangle is now a happy little circle. My sister-in-law just gave birth to my gorgeous new niece who is the world's best cuddler, and Nonna's not on my back every ten minutes about the fact we're getting married in one month. Supposedly. Until the mayor's niece—our baker for the wedding—commits suicide. At least, that's what the note says. My gut says we're talking a different kind of 'cide.' My gut also says I should stay well away, and in the interest of Drake's sanity, I plan to. But when life throws you an unexpected curveball... Sometimes the best laid plans need tearing up. Even if you don't mean to do it. Happily ever after... If Holly Woods survives this.    (Twined Bond is the seventh and final book in the Holly Woods Files series, and picks up roughly nine months after the end of Burning Bond. It cannot be read as a standalone, but may require tissues.)

1p0a9045ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
By day, New York Times and USA Today bestselling New Adult author Emma Hart dons a cape and calls herself Super Mum to two beautiful little monsters. By night, she drops the cape, pours a glass of whatever she fancies - usually wine - and writes books.
Emma is working on Top Secret projects she will share with her followers and fans at every available opportunity. Naturally, all Top Secret projects involve a dashingly hot guy who likes to forget to wear a shirt, a sprinkling (or several) of hold-onto-your-panties hot scenes, and a whole lotta love.  She likes to be busy - unless busy involves doing the dishes, but that seems to be when all the ideas come to life.

Book Review: SEARCHING FOR DISASTER by Jennifer Probst

Searching for Disaster
by Jennifer Probst
Searching For #4.6

About the Book
When Isabella MacKenzie tries to move on from her disastrous past, Officer William Devine is determined to show her that love is the only way to heal. This sexy enovella, the final installment in Jennifer Probst’s heartwarming Searching For series, follows the high-powered women of the popular matchmaking agency Kinnections, located in the small, picturesque town of Verily, NY.

REVIEW
Jennifer Probst’s books remind me of delicious chocolate cake. Bursting with flavor, decadently rich, the Searching For series is very satisfying.  Searching for Disaster is slightly different in flavor and approach.  This story is more like a delicate pastry.  It is multi-layered and delicate with subtle tastes.  By book 4.6 we are familiar with the town of Verity, and we know how Kinnections works, but Izzy and Liam have a different kind of story to tell.

Izzy and Liam meet 6 years prior, before her drug addiction and his entrance into the police academy.  They reunite at Kinnections where she is a receptionist and he is an officer with the Verity police department.  Neither is able to forget that night together and the attraction is immediate, but Izzy is very conscious of how fragile her recovery can be and does not want to re-introduce a factor from her past that might cause her to backslide.  However, little by little, Liam wins her over with his patience and honesty.  She does not fall easily and he has to win her trust.  I also really liked the fact that she does not feel the need to “name the relationship”, in other words, she does not need to label what they have.  She does worry that she might not be good enough for him, so she proceeds cautiously, one day at a time.

Liam is used to things that are precise, controlled, and neat.  However, with Izzy, he is more interested in the road less travelled. Izzy is a recovering drug addict and needs a different kind of approach.  He appreciates the way she genuinely and honesty faces her life:

“He’d realized imprefectness had a rough beauty about it, especially when people held a willingness to see the truth about themselves. . . . She never flinched when she told him her story, owning her mistakes as well as her triumphs.”

Who does not admire someone who is willing to do the work to achieve something with depth and resilience?

I love the Search For series.  The emotions, the dramatic storylines, the memorable characters, and the dogs (oh, the dogs), make these stories soul-satisfying.  Nice ending, Ms. Probst.  A very nice ending, indeed.
